The good news: several of this year’s standout films at the Tribeca Film Festival are by women. The bad news: some of the fest’s worst misfires are also by women.

The good news first. Your Sister’s Sister by Lynn Shelton (Hump Day) is pure delight, from its opening scene to its teasing wrap-up, and with any justice should cross over from art house to mainstream. It beats Hollywood at the rom com game, nimbly dodging the usual pandering character of studio product.

The set up: Jack (the inimitable Mark Duplass) makes a toast at his brother’s memorial that sounds perilously close to a nervous breakdown. To the rescue comes his best friend Iris (Emily Blunt), who persuades him to chill out at her family’s country house on the Puget sound. On arriving, Jack discovers the house has been already claimed by Iris’s sister Hanna (Rosemarie Dewitt — and are all these Hannas, with or without the “h,” a salute to Woody Allen?). Sister #2 is holed up there knocking back the tequila after a breakup with her girlfriend of seven years. Jack helps her polish off the bottle and in a ‘why not?’ spirit they hit the sack. Iris, meanwhile Office 2010 Key, has somehow figured out that she’s in love with Jack and appears the next morning for a meeting of the hearts.

A chamber piece with a candidly contrived premise, Your Sister’s Sister offers nary a hint of a world beyond the groins of the characters (like most Amerindie films, alas). But what makes this one a must-see is the way Lynn Shelton has honed improvisation to a fine art. Sister boasts dialogue so spontaneous and true, it makes most of what you currently hear on movie or TV screens sound wooden and canned. Emily Blunt and Rosemarie Dewitt ride with the improv spirit — “you are freaking me out on so many levels,” says Hanna in response to Jack’s come-on.

But the master of this game — and irresistible — is Mark Duplass. Let’s hope he’s not co-opted, ground up, and spat out by Hollywood. LOL funny throughout, Duplass’s “seduction” scene with Dewitt — complete with a well-timed “ta da!” — is a comic gem. Seemingly spun from the conversation you just finished, this film demands a second viewing just to watch how Shelton and Duplass work their magic.

Make a 360 degree turn and you’ll bump into Polisse by beautiful French multitasker Maiwenn. Winner of the Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes, this hit from France follows the daily lives of a tight-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police. With Hurt Locker Kathryn Bigelow demonstrated that women can make ballsy “men’s films.” Similarly, Maiwenn wades right into a lot of gritty, nasty stuff involving child molestation and exploitation, while exploring the inevitable stresses the work places on individual members of the team.

The film is not all grim; the unit’s rambunctious evenings and a hot love affair diffuse the daily horrors. The acting is aces all round — and includes a turn from director Maiwenn (her beauty almost distracting ) as a photographer assigned to document the unit’s work. Particularly fine is Karin Viard, a naturally elegant actress who here reinvents herself as a vice cop.

Two other notable films by women at this year’s TFF include Future Weather by Jenny Deller about the superhuman resilience and resourcefulness of a 13-year-old girl (Perla Haney-Jardine) abandoned by a trailer trash mom. You’ll root for this preternaturally wise teen who surmounts emotional abuse through her talent for science and passionate concern for the environment, nurtured by an empathic teacher (Lili Taylor). Nisha Pahuja, another female director, weighs in with the illuminating The World Before Her, which lays out two equally dismaying avenues for women in India looking to better their situation. Docs such as this are truly, in the words of fest founder Jane Rosenthal, “mind-blowing.”

Now for the misfires. According to the TFF catalog Windows 7 Serial, Elles by French-Polish director Maigoska Szumowska is about the “entangled female experience” and conflicting imagery of female sexuality. Entangled is the operative word here. Nothing makes an iota of sense in this farrago about a journalist (Juliette Binoche) with a seemingly happy domestic life, who goes into erotic freefall as she researches a story on female college students working as prostitutes. Essentially porn gussied up as insightful drama, the film exploits the superb Juliette Binoche, who somehow toughs it through. Explicit scenes with the production values of an internet jerk off site are punctuated by excerpts from Beethoven’s 7th Server 2003 Key!

Equally vile is the doc Sexy Baby by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, which purports to expose the extent to which sex saturates American culture by focusing on a pole dancer, a pre teen girl, and a kindergarten teacher about to undergo plastic surgery of a highly intimate nature. Ladies, thanks but no thanks for sharing. This smarmy baby is enough to make you join the Republican war on sex — or at least move to Canada.

SANAA, May 13, 2012 (Reuters) — A senior aide to Barack Obama flew into Yemen on Sunday to meet the leader of a country battling with al Qaeda insurgents that Washington believes has also targeted the United States, a Yemeni official said.

The visit of John Brennan, the U.S. president’s counter-terrorism adviser Tattoos Kits For Sale, comes as Yemen is on a new offensive against Islamist rebels and after Washington said it had foiled an airliner bomb plot linked to al Qaeda’s Yemen-based affiliate.

Washington has stepped up its drone attacks in Yemen since President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office in February, and the Pentagon said this week it had recently resumed sending military trainers into the Gulf Arab country.

Brennan will meet with Hadi “to reiterate holistic U.S. support to Yemen not only in the field of counter-terrorism but also by providing assistance to help Yemen overcome its many other economic and security challenges The Best Tattoo Kits,” Mohammed al-Basha, a Washington-based Yemeni government spokesman, told Reuters.

Brennan’s visit also comes amid increasing attacks and kidnapping attempts on officials and foreign diplomats as the impoverished state tries to wrest back control of its restive south from Islamist rebels.

Unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade at the house of Information Minister Ali al-Amrani on Saturday. A bystander was wounded in the foot during a shoot-out as the men escaped Tattoos Ink, Abdel-Basset al-Qaedi, a member of Amrani’s staff, said.

In January, gunmen opened fire on the information minister’s car in an apparent assassination attempt, and on Saturday Bulgaria’s ambassador escaped an apparent kidnap attempt in the capital Sanaa.

On Sunday, at least 10 militants were killed in clashes with the Yemeni army near the southern city of Zinjibar. Six militants were killed on Saturday night in an air strike in Zinjibar, the Defence Ministry said in an online statement.

Two apparent U.S. drone attacks killed at least 10 suspected al Qaeda-linked militants on Saturday, officials said.

Washington backed a power transfer plan that made Hadi the successor to President Ali Abdullah Saleh after a year of mass protests which coincided with a split in the army that threatened to erupt into civil war.

The United States and Saudi Arabia, both targets of failed attacks by Yemen’s al Qaeda branch, want Hadi to unite the army and roll back gains made by Islamists who seized southern towns during the political turmoil.

HOUSTON (Reuters) – Natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp will split the jobs of chairman and chief executive, and bring an early end to a program that granted CEO Aubrey McClendon stakes in company wells, an arrangement that sparked investor anger and potentially created serious conflicts of interest.

McClendon, a co-founder of the company, will be replaced as chairman by an independent, non-executive chairman, and the arrangement that allowed McClendon to buy a 2.5 stake in each of Chesapeake’s wells — the Founder Well Participation Program (FWPP) — will end 18 months early, in June 2014. McClendon will receive no compensation whatsoever from the program, according to a statement by the company.

Chesapeake was under pressure from one of the company’s largest shareholders to agree to an early end to the FWPP, which had been scheduled to run through 2015. Chesapeake’s board said last week that it planned to negotiate an early termination of the plan.

“We are pleased that the board has listened to our input and believe it has made the right decision by ending the FWPP early and seeking an independent chairman,” O. Mason Hawkins, head of Southeastern Asset Management Tattoo Ink Sets, said in Chesapeake’s statement.

The comment was the first from Hawkins, a reclusive investor based in Memphis, Tennessee, whose firm owns 13 percent of Chesapeake.

The oil and gas company, the second-largest producer of natural gas, also reported a smaller quarterly net loss. McClendon will speak to investors on the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.

In response to the changes at the company, Chesapeake shares rose substantially, closing 6 percent higher at $19.60 on the New York Stock Exchange. After the close of regular trading, the stock fell 2.5 percent, however.

GOVERNMENT SCRUTINY

Chesapeake’s moves came less than two weeks after Reuters reported that McClendon had taken out as much as $1.1 billion in personal loans with his well stakes as collateral, an arrangement that analysts and academics said posed potentially serious conflicts of interest.

The well program has also come under the scrutiny of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS probe, included in an SEC filing on Monday Tattoo Of Tattoo Machine, had previously not been disclosed to shareholders.

“We believe separation of the chairman and CEO roles will improve Chesapeake’s corporate governance and the early termination of the FWPP will eliminate a source of controversy, both of which should send a positive signal to the market and improve shareholder value,” Merrill “Pete” Miller Jr., Chesapeake’s lead independent director Tattoo Machines And Supplies, said in a statement.

Chesapeake board members are considering candidates for the chairmanship “with no previous substantive relationship with Chesapeake and will be soliciting input from major shareholders,” the company said.

Board members contacted by Reuters referred queries to Chesapeake and George Sard, CEO of public relations firm Sard Verbinnen & Co.

“I think the board members decided they’d had enough,” said industry analyst Mike Breard of Hodges Capital in Dallas, which owns Chesapeake shares. “They needed to look at Chesapeake as a big company — and not as a small company run by one man.”

Other investors argued more action is needed.

“The New York State Common Retirement Fund has long been concerned about Aubrey McClendon’s dual role as chairman and CEO of Chesapeake,” said Thomas DiNapoli, New York’s comptroller. “Much remains to be done to restore investor confidence in this company, and we hope this is one of several steps Chesapeake’s board will take to achieve that goal.”

David Dreman, who has been critical of the company and owns 1 million shares of Chesapeake, said the board could have ended the program immediately.

“They’re (the board) bending to the winds of the IRS and the SEC, but they’re certainly not taking the lead internally in making significant changes,” said Dreman, who is chairman of Dreman Value Management LLP.

FIRST-QUARTER RESULTS

Chesapeake reported a first-quarter net loss as it took a non-cash charge based on a lower market value for its hedges. Excluding items, the company earned 18 cents a share, well short of the 29 cents expected on average by analysts.

The company, which has broad exposure to natural gas prices, said it would significantly reduce spending on drilling and acreage purchases during the rest of this year.

Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake reported a net loss of $71 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $205 million, or 32 cents per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Chesapeake’s average daily oil and gas output rose 18 percent in the first quarter.

To close an expected funding gap of as much as $6 billion, Chesapeake plans to raise up to $14 billion through asset sales and other transactions in 2012, it said.

So far, the company has raised $2.6 billion by issuing preferred shares and doing other types of transactions.

Read our complete coverage of the GOP Convention and Sarah Palin. Buy Christian Audigier Clothes

Ann and Nancy Wilson Buy DKNY Clothing, the frontwomen of the rock band Heart, are demanding that the McCain campaign stop using their 1977 song “Barracuda” at political rallies after the song was played in honor of vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin on both Wednesday and Thursday nights. Does the McCain campaign have to honor the Wilsons’ wishes?

Not if the campaign has the correct license. Like thousands of other songs, “Barracuda” is distributed by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Buy DKNY Dresses, meaning that any entity that is licensed with ASCAP can play a song without getting the artist’s explicit permission. This license can be held by a venue Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, like a club or a sports arena Cheap Marc Jacobs Dresses, and apply to all events that take place there. In this case, the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., would be the holder, but a representative tells the Explainer that the venue’s ASCAP license applies only to sporting events for the Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Swarm, the professional hockey and lacrosse teams, respectively; otherwise, it’s up to the people who use the premises to get their own. A spokesperson for the Republican Convention said the event did have an ASCAP license separate from the one for sports.

Assuming the licenses were all in order, the Wilson sisters probably don’t have much legal recourse. But it would be a much different story if the campaign had used the song in an ad or a promotional video. While an ASCAP license covers the right to perform a song, you need a separate “synchronization license” from the publisher to put the song in an ad. Some artists ask for stipulations in their contracts with publishers that prevent their songs from being used for political advertisements or any other causes they find objectionable. (Neil Diamond, for example, is known to be very reluctant to license his songs for programming that is even vaguely political.)

Last month, singer-songwriter Jackson Browne sued the McCain campaign, the Republican National Committee, and the Ohio Republican Party over the use of his song “Running on Empty” in an ad without obtaining a sync license. Had the McCain campaign used “Barracuda” in a video montage about Palin, they would have been required to get this permission, which the Wilson sisters presumably would have rejected—assuming their publisher asked them.

It’s very common for musicians to object to the use of their material. The McCain campaign has already run afoul of several other artists this year, including John Mellencamp and Van Halen. In both those cases, the artists were objecting to the use of their songs at rallies Replica Herve leger strapless, where an ASCAP license would apply. The McCain campaign agreed to stop playing Mellencamp songs voluntarily. The issue also frequently crops up with Christian groups that do not wish their material to be used at events they find objectionable.

If the campaign chooses to continue playing “Barracuda,” and so much so that it becomes associated with Palin, the Wilson sisters could have a legal claim. They might argue a violation of their “right to publicity,” which protects a person from having her identity used for marketing purposes. Such protections vary by state and tend to apply to commercial products, not political messages.

Aside from the bridge loans supplied to GM by the federal government Buy Herve Leger gown, GM had applied for $10.3 billion from the Energy Department. Of that amount Cheap Herve leger strapless, $2.6 billion was meant to be devoted to building the Chevy Volt and two derivatives of it Chanel Dresses sale, as well as a third hybrid model. Volkswagen Up Buy Bandage dresses! Lite Concept – click above for high-res image gallery

Volkswagen has just taken the cover off an all-new concept called the Up! Lite, a sinister looking diesel hybrid that gets (according to VW) 70 mpg combined. As in both City and Highway. Impressive, even if that only ends up being 90 percent accurate. In fact, should Volkswagen decide to green light the unfortunately named Up Replica Bandage dresses! Lite, it would be the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly four seat vehicle on the planet. Again Replica Emilio Pucci Dresses, if the Up White Herve leger sale! Lite comes to fruition, we’ll all be impressed. Interestingly, this concept isn’t the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly car on earth is because another Volkswagen — the L1 from Frankfurt – is. But it only seats two.

Ready for the good parts? The aptly titled Up! Lite barely tips the scales at 1,530 pounds. There are Honda Goldwings flirting with that weight class. This svelteness is achieved via a mix of aluminum, lightweight steel and carbon fiber. For instance, the roof is made entirely from the expensive weave. And those amazing wheels consist of ten carbon-fiber spokes and an aluminum fairing. Nifty, no? The tiny, stylized winglettes replace conventional rearview mirrors and contain cameras instead of reflective glass. The same holds true for the interior mounted mirror, as has been replaced by a camera.

Up front, there’s an active air dam that opens up as needed. The extra cooling will help out the TDI hybrid drive lifted from the two-seater L1. This 800cc powerplant transmits power to the wheels using a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Even though the diesel engine is teeny, when coupled to the electric motor, the Up! Lite can reach 100 mph and hit 60 mph in 12 seconds. Not fast by any means, but good enough – especially for an ultra-high mileage vehicle. And it can haul stuff, too – including humans. Unlike the Up! Concept we saw in Frankfurt, the Up! Lite seats four people, and with the rear seats folded, it can haul 30 cubic feet of stuff. Not bad at all.

Overall, we’re pretty impressed by the looks and promise of the Up Cheap Karen Millen Dresses! Lite. In our estimation, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with blending a Honda CRX with a Volvo C30. Will the Up Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses! Lite ever make it to production? Who knows. VW claims the first Up!s(?) will go on sale in 2011. We get the sense that any future decision will be based on how the two-door Up! does. But we get the feeling the Up! Lite might give the people more of what they want. Official press release after the jump.
